Andrew Iredale

Later issues of Iredale´s Plan of Torquay

In the early 1900s Iredale updated this map and proceeded to issue it in it in different formats. The new map is divided into (new) quarter-mile squares and shows the town with its new suburbs of Chelston with Cockington and St Marychurch (amalgamated 6th November 1900) with the latter showing considerable development. It was a little smaller than the original and was issued in (at least) three colourings: uncoloured; a standard colouring with red tram lines; and one coloured to highlight the wards.

One further map has been seen, also a folding map in covers and probably designed for the increasing numbers of tourists visiting the area. Iredale’s New Map of the Environs of Torquay covered the area from Exeter to Start Bay so included all the Tor Bay area (620 x 375 mm and scale 2 miles at 40 mm). It is very similar to the Ordnance Survey combined sheet map of 1901 (see OS – Torquay 2) but is not a straight copy. Although both maps were produced around 1910, the latter map must be a little later as the publisher was now Iredale and Son.

At the time that the latter map was published, Iredale was advertising his business as the Largest Circulatng Library in the County of Devon. He was also still operating the fine art gallery from the same shop but had additional premises at 1, Torbay Road, Paignton.

Size: 615 x 460 mm.    Scale (1/2 = 98 mm) Mile.
